Game Store Sites

I am comparing Gamestop's and EBgames' sites to see if there are any differences in the way they present there stock of games to consumers.

GameStop:
Their homepage presents a dropdown menu at the top of the screen with titles of the platforms whose games they provide. Gamewise, the menu items show New games and preowned games for all systems except for the Sony PSP, Nintendo DS, PC and NGage. (I'm guess that the lack of division of category for the PSP and DS are due to the limited availability of games. I know that they don't sell used PC games. Who plays NGage games?)

As subcategories, they allow users to choose genres: Action, Adventure, Family, Fighting, Online, Platform, Puzzle, Racing, Role-Playing, Simulation, Shooters, Sports, and Strategy. Note: the NGage actually is broken down into 11 genres.

EBgames:
Has a similar menu as GameStop to seperate platforms, although not dropdown. After selecting a console, games are divided into the following sections: Action Adventure, Compilations, Family, Fighting, Greatest Hits, Online Games, Platform, Pre-Played, Puzzle, RPG, Shooters, Simulation, Sports*, Strategy.

*Sports includes a submenu that shows individual sport types (Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Extreme Sports, Football, Golf, Hockey, Hunting and Fishing, Racing, Soccer, Wrestling, and More Sports).

Differences:
I noticed that:
  • EB doesn't strictly organize their games by genre
  • EB adds categories for Compilations and Greatest Hits
  • EB combines Action and Adventure into one genre

I'll try to remember to look through a Game Informer magazine to see if they have anything that is unique.

Looks like the next step is to identify characteristics of the genres.
